Anti-covid vaccines: once again Centro Culturale Lepanto (CCL, Lepanto Cultural Center) is compelled to distance itself from prof. de Mattei, president of Fondazione Lepanto (FL, Lepanto Foundation)

It is with great pain and sadness that once again we are compelled to distance ourselves from Professor de Mattei and his Fondazione Lepanto (FL), due to his stance in favor of the use of vaccines produced from cell lines of voluntarily aborted fetuses.

In fact, far too often we have found that the people we come into contact with tend to automatically associate the CCL with the FL, with the consequence that the two are thought to share the same positions.

Instead we have once again to reiterate that in 2006 de Mattei resigned as president of CCL by slamming the door, in 2007 he replaced the previous FL, initially established as a branch of CCL, with a new Foundation and therefore he no longer has anything to do with CCL.

Therefore, we as a CCL absolutely dissociate ourselves from de Mattei's thought that under certain conditions the use of the aforementioned vaccines is morally licit. For us, on the contrary, it always remains morally unacceptable, as indicated in the document released on 12 December 2020 by five prelates, the Metropolitan Archbishop emeritus of Riga (Latvia) Cardinal Janis Pujats, the Metropolitan Archbishop of the archdiocese of Saint Mary in Astana (Kazakhstan) Tomash Peta, the Archbishop - Bishop emeritus of Karaganda (Kazakhstan) Jan Pawel Lenga, the Bishop of Tyler (USA) Joseph E. Strickland and the Auxiliary Bishop of the archdiocese of Saint Mary in Astana (Kazakhstan) Athanasius Schneider.

In his blog "La scure di Elia" (the hatchet of Elijah) a traditionalist Catholic priest, who presents himself as don Elia, claims that the so-called vaccine, in the plan of Divine Providence, is working like a sieve that separates sand from gold. "All men are thus at a crossroads that forces them to choose whether to go one way or the other. At stake is not only physical safety, but also consistency with the truth and, consequently, eternal salvation. It is an issue on which one cannot absolutely give in, since the slightest compromise can cause the collapse of the whole cultural, social and religious building".

However, it is also important to remember that the need for these denials is a consequence of the confusion created by the stubborn obstinacy with which de Mattei continues undaunted to boast a non-existent continuity and / or association of his Foundation with our CCL.

In late 2019, de Mattei even published a book on the history of the CCL in the years of his presidency, from its foundation in 1982 until 2006, proclaiming that his Rome-based FL has inherited the legacy of CCL, in full continuity with the latter’s past activity, almost as if he had been and continued to be a sort of absolute owner. An "unauthorized" story that we have repeatedly criticized on this site for its inaccuracies, omissions and inconsistencies. In a recent book published in English,

de Mattei went so far as to pass himself off in his short biographical profile as the current "director of the Lepanto Cultural Center in Rome", a position that never existed within the CCL .

Thus on the one hand in his history of CCL he maintains that the organisation has disbanded, whereas in the above English book even claims to be the current holder of a CCL position that never existed.

A confusion further increased by other factors, such as the publication of a bulletin, Lepanto, which continues to come out with a cover on which a crusader, the CCL logo, stands out. The same logo, albeit in a smaller format, is used by De Mattei to promote the books of his publishing house Edizioni Fiducia. Had he been fully consistent with the implications of his resignation as president and founding member, he should have renounced it, including the use of the very name Lepanto.
